Vaginal Health 101: What No One Taught Us, But We All Deserve to Know
Share
Let’s be real — most of us didn’t grow up getting the full story when it comes to vaginal health. We were either told to keep it clean (but not too clean), warned about “smelling off,” or handed a stack of pink packaging and expected to just... figure it out. And when things felt off down there? Embarrassment, confusion, silence.
If you’ve ever Googled “why does my coochie feel weird” at 2 a.m. — same, babe. And that’s exactly why I’m writing this.
As the founder of Permissive, I believe in rewriting the rules around intimacy, self-care, and the conversations we’re allowed to have about our bodies — especially the parts we’ve been taught to feel weird about. Because guess what? Your vagina is smart, sensitive, and totally capable of thriving — it just needs the right kind of attention.
So whether you’re dealing with recurring infections, trying to balance your pH, or just want to understand what’s actually going on down there, this guide is for you. Let’s talk about fabrics, fluids, checks, and all the juicy stuff no one taught us in health class — without shame, without judgment, and with a little fun. 💁🏽♀️
💨 Breathable Fabrics = A Happy Vagina
Here’s something I wish someone told me earlier: your coochie needs to breathe. Not metaphorically — literally.
Our vulvas (the external part of our genitals) are sensitive and full of sweat glands. When we trap them in tight, synthetic fabrics all day — think polyester panties, wet swimsuits, or gym leggings you wear way after your workout — we’re basically creating a humid little spa for bacteria and yeast. Cute? Not so much.
Why it matters:
Lack of airflow can lead to irritation, odor, and infections.
Synthetic fabrics hold in moisture and don’t allow your skin to breathe.
Tight clothing can cause friction and even tiny microtears, making you more vulnerable to imbalances.
My go-to tips:
Stick to 100% cotton underwear (yes, even the sexy ones).
At night, try sleeping without underwear to let everything breathe.
Change out of wet or sweaty clothes ASAP — no lounging in that swimsuit all afternoon (even if you're feeling yourself).
🍞 Yeast Infections Aren’t Dirty (But They Are Preventable)
Let’s clear something up: getting a yeast infection does not mean you’re dirty, gross, or did something wrong. It means your vaginal environment — which is naturally full of bacteria and yeast — just got a little out of balance. It happens to so many of us, and yet somehow we still whisper about it like it’s taboo.
Your vagina is a delicate ecosystem. When something tips the balance — stress, antibiotics, hormonal shifts, friction, or even that scented body wash you thought was cute — candida (a natural yeast) can overgrow, and boom: itching, discharge, irritation.
Common triggers include:
Wearing damp or tight underwear
Using heavily fragranced soaps or douches (seriously, ditch them)
Antibiotics that wipe out good bacteria
Hormonal changes (hello, period week)
Diets high in sugar or yeast
Immune system changes
What to look for:
Thick, white discharge (like cottage cheese — sexy, I know)
Redness or itching
Burning during sex or while peeing
Swelling or irritation in the vulva
If you think you have one, don’t panic. There are safe, effective treatments — both OTC and prescription. But if it keeps happening, that’s your body waving a little red flag saying, “Hey babe, let’s look at what’s going on.”
✨ I personally keep a pH-balanced, fragrance-free wash on hand (you can find ones I trust over on GoPermissive.com) — and I never use anything that throws off my flora. Period.
🧬 Understanding Your pH (And Why It Matters)
You’ve probably seen “pH-balanced” slapped on every bottle in the hygiene aisle — but what does that actually mean for you?
The vagina is naturally acidic, with a pH of about 3.8–4.5. That acidity helps keep harmful bacteria out and good bacteria (like Lactobacillus) thriving. But when your pH rises too high — let’s say from semen, soap, or even bubble baths — things get out of whack.
When your pH is off, you might notice:
A strong smell (especially after sex)
Gray or watery discharge
Irritation or itching
Recurrent infections (BV, yeast, etc.)
This is why using the wrong products down there isn’t just annoying — it’s a full-body no. Douching? No. Highly fragranced wipes? Nope. Soap made for your elbows and knees? Also nope.
What helps:
Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser (once a day is enough)
Avoid internal products unless recommended by a provider
Let your body do what it does best — it’s self-cleaning for a reason
✨ If you’re in the market for a reset, I’m working on a little freebie I’ll be dropping later this month: a Self-Care Ritual Tracker to help you build daily habits that keep you feeling aligned, from your brain to your vulva.
🔍 Don’t Fear the Self-Check
Here’s something I want to normalize: checking your own vulva and vagina is not weird — it’s powerful. You check your skin, your breasts, your nails... so why not your bits?
I’m not saying you need to do a full internal exam every week (unless you’re into that — no shame here), but getting familiar with your baseline helps you know what’s normal for you. That way, if something ever changes — smell, texture, color, discharge, pain — you catch it early.
Here’s how to start:
Grab a mirror and find a comfortable position.
Look at your vulva: labia, clitoris, vaginal opening. Notice shape, color, and texture.
Use clean fingers to check for any swelling, tenderness, or unusual discharge.
Breathe. This is yours. There’s no shame here.
Over time, this builds trust between you and your body. You stop being surprised by changes, and you stop letting fear or shame drive your health decisions.
✨ Want to make it a ritual? Light a candle, put on your favorite playlist, and check in with your body like you would a best friend. You deserve that kind of care.
👙 Vaginal Wellness in Summer (aka Swamp Season)
Hot girl summer is great... until it turns into hot-and-sweaty-down-there summer. Between pool days, tight shorts, and living in activewear, this season can throw your vaginal balance for a loop if you’re not careful.
Here’s how to stay fresh and comfy without the overkill:
Keep baby wipes or a peri bottle on hand for mid-day refreshes (fragrance-free only, please)
Opt for looser clothing when you can (it is sundress and no panties season) — your bits will thank you
Drink water like your sex life depends on it (because it kinda does)
Skip the thongs on high-sweat days and let those cheeks breathe
Air-dry after showering, even if it feels a little awkward — moisture = bacteria’s BFF
💖 You Deserve to Feel at Home in Your Body
I want to leave you with this: your vagina is not a mystery to be solved or a problem to be fixed. It’s a part of you — alive, responsive, intuitive, and worthy of care without shame.
For too long, we’ve been taught to disconnect from this part of our body. To ignore it until something’s wrong. To keep it hidden, silent, unspoken — unless someone else was benefiting from it.
But the truth? Your pleasure, your health, your rhythm — it starts with you. Knowing how to care for your vaginal wellness is an act of self-respect. It’s the difference between reacting to symptoms and building rituals that nourish you daily.
Whether it’s swapping out synthetic panties, switching to pH-balanced wash, learning how to spot imbalances early, or just saying “no thanks” to the shame — you’re taking control. And that’s sexy as hell.
